Depart Auckland for Rotorua, stopping en route at Wilderness Gems, Ngatea, to view an impressive selection of gemstones, crystals, greenstone, paua jewellery, carvings and gifts.

Enjoy a Lake Rotorua luncheon cruise on board the replica paddle steamer Lakeland Queen (lunch included).

Stroll through Rotorua’s beautiful Government Gardens and the active thermal area at Lake Rotorua.

Visit Whakarewarewa, a Maori village set in a landscape of erupting geysers, hot thermal springs and bubbling mud pools. Witness the awesome power of the Pohutu and Prince of Wales Feathers geysers.

Enjoy an evening hangi - a traditional Maori feast of food cooked beneath the ground on hot rocks - at Tamaki Maori Village. Experience traditional Maori culture and learn about pre-European life in a living village recreated in the forest.

Overnight in Rotorua.

Next morning visit the Aratiatia Rapids on the Waikato River, and watch these spectacular rapids surge into life when the flood gates of the hydroelectric Aratiatia dam are opened.

See the famous Huka Falls which roar through a narrow gap in a gorge and drop 11 metres to the river below, at a rate of 300,000 litres a second.

Drive through a maze of steam pipes to a lookout over the impressive Wairakei geothermal steam fields.

Visit the spectacular man-made Wairakei Terraces, where hot, silica-enriched water flows over man-made foundations which is slowly creating new natural silica terraces. In time these terraces will look like miniature versions of the famous Pink and White Terraces, which were destroyed when Mount Tarawera erupted violently in 1886.

Admire the breathtaking scenery from the shores of Lake Taupo, New Zealand’s largest lake, with the snow-capped mountain peaks of Ruapehu, Tongariro and Ngauruhoe in the distance.

Return to our accommodation in Rotorua.

Next morning drive through the Waikato countryside to Waitomo. Visit the world-famous Waitomo Glowworm Caves which have attracted millions of people from all over the world for more than 100 years. Take a boat ride through the eerie darkness of the Glowworm Grotto to see millions of glowworms lighting up the roof.

Stop at Otorohanga on the way back to Auckland to visit the Kiwi House and native bird park. See the nocturnal kiwi, tuatara (native lizard) and rare native birds in New Zealand’s largest aviary.
